Why having a winter wedding in a castle is best

Winter wedding in a castle

Although the warmer months remain high season as far as weddings are concerned, there are plenty of reasons to tie the knot during the winter. It can be more budget-friendly, guests and venues often have greater and more flexible availability, plus you can piggyback on the Christmas season for a bit of added festive glamour and sparkle, and serve seasonal goodies like mince pies and warming mulled wine.

What’s more, if you’re of an age where all your mates seem to be getting hitched at the same time, in peak season ‘wedding fatigue’ is not unheard of. Hold yours at a different time of year and it will really stand out, while also providing something special your guests will look forward to.

Equally, there are a number of reasons for holding your winter wedding at a castle in particular. Here are some of them:

A dramatic backdrop

You may associate the winter months with the cold and darkness, but the light can be so much more interesting at this time of year. When it does show up, because it’s low in the sky, the sun can create a dreamily soft look, while the sunsets are spectacular. A castle forms the perfect background for some seriously atmospheric photos, and if you get a dusting of snow as well, you will have some truly stunning memories of your special day.

Rich and opulent

Wintry conditions set off the opulence of a castle to perfection, and you can make the most of the grand halls and big fireplaces. And if you thought castles couldn’t be cosy places when the weather outside is frightful, think again! No one will be saying that when you’re enjoying those mince pies by a roaring fire.

At the same time, castle settings suit rich, opulent hues; ideal if you don’t fancy a pastel colour scheme for your wedding. Think bold greens, reds, golds, plum and similar darker, full-blooded shades and sumptuous fabrics, all of which suit a darker, colder time of year.

Remove the uncertainty

No one will be expecting the perfect summer’s day or evening, or wondering whether to come prepared for a sudden downpour. You essentially know what you’re getting in winter as far as the weather is concerned. The focus will be on the great indoors – and what better indoor location than a castle?

Up the romance

The dark evenings, sparkling frost and chill in the air can all combine to create a headily romantic atmosphere. In a castle, with firelight, candlelight and winter colours, this factor is upped considerably. Add some fireworks and sparklers to light up the castle against a dark winter sky and you’re on to something genuinely magical.
